Jane Birkin’s request that Hermès remove her moniker from its iconic style serves as a pretty mega reminder that a ton of It Bags are given female names. Whether it’s after a celebrity, a close friend of the designer, or just something that had a pretty ring to it, shopping site Lyst reports that nearly a third of all bags have a feminine name.
The girl’s name that’s proved to be most popular for a bag is Alexa, as in the Mulberry satchel named for girl-about-town Alexa Chung (spotted above with her namesake piece). By combing through sale and search data, Lyst was able to come up with a list of the top 20 handbag names. Presented alphabetically, the big winners are:
Anita (Saint Laurent)
Carine (Tom Ford)
Casey (Michael Kors)
Daphne (Jason Wu)
Diane (Jason Wu)
Emmanuelle (Saint Laurent)
Pandora (Givenchy, Charlotte Olympia)
Ricky (Ralph Lauren)
Rocco (Alexander Wang)
Selma (Michael Kors)
Sophia/Sofia (Marc Jacobs, Salvatore Ferragamo)
Thea (Tory Burch)

Some of the names come from well-known muses. For Tom Ford, it’s Carine Roitfeld; for Gucci, it’s Jackie O.; and for Ralph Lauren, it’s his gorgeous wife Ricky. Miss Chung isn’t the only modern style icon to claim a naming either—Jason Wu’s “Diane” style is for his “perennial muse”, Diane Kruger.
