H&M continues to tackle the issue of sustainability in fashion with the launch of a new ‘Global Change Award’ grant, with €1 million worth of prize money for the winning environmental ideas.
Swedish high street, high volume apparel brand, H&M continues to square its focus on sustainability in fashion manufacturing with a new grant aimed at supporting the progression of sustainable research and techniques.
The announcement came yesterday that the company has pledged a €1 million grant to promote clothing recycling, dubbed – ‘Global Change Award.’ Innovators are free to apply for the grant with their ideas and must submit their ideas by the end of October. The applicants will be considered by the jury of professors and CEOs, together with Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani and model/actress Amber Valetta. Five winners will be selected and announced in February and each winner will receive €100,000 to go towards their innovative idea.
The remaining €500,000 will be distributed to ideas and innovations via an online public vote, to further promote environmental responsibility in fashion.
H&M has said that this new grant “represents a radical departure from the old linear ‘take, make, waste’ production and consumption models to a model where products and resources are designed to have more than one life.” The hope is that the industry as a whole will follow suit and take on sustainable practices across the board.
