You might know Jean-Claude Jitrois as a French designer who made a name through his handling of leather. He created a high quality leather that can stretch which to many feels like a second skin, and following French philosopher Paul Valéry quotation, “skin is the deepest thing there is”.
Jean-Claude Jitrois himself is an extremely curious person. He studied psychology in Paris and worked with some of the leading psychoanalysts of the 20th century. He spent more than ten years in the field of psychomotricity – the close relationship between the psyche and the body. He even was made director of the psychomotricity department of the University of Nice and wrote several books. But in 1976 we found him starting to design clothes.
When it comes to love of leather, he tells the story about his father who was an airport pilot. Jean Claude who was six years old had a fascination for his jacket and its material.
When he started designing in 70-s, his desire was to turn leather into something beautiful, sophisticated and appealing. He purchased a small store in Nice, then in the town of Juan-les-Pins and in St. Tropez making pieces for Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Cher. Looking through Jitrois archive, we can find photos of celebrities from Elizabeth Taylor to Mike Tyson. As Jitrois says, leather is the material that protects you but also puts you in the limelight. What made him famous among celebrities is that he was listening to their desires, most exotic fantasies, and he was able to translate this to fashion language. “They want to wear leather, but as their second skin, to still be naked or exposed”, he says.
Considered to be a pioneer in leather couture, Jean-Claude Jitrois has enabled to democratize leather ready-to-wear in 90-s by inventing stretch leather pants. It was an incredible revolution with launching a line of leather trousers made to look and feel like jeans. And in 2009, Jitrois launched a line of machine washable leather stretch jeans which could be ironed.
Jitrois is the cult leather luxury label bringing French sophistication to the world, opening stores around the world and Dubai Fashion TV hopes Dubai is on the short-list.
