Fine art gallery, West Contemporary, introduces the talent of globally-recognised mixed-media British artist, Carne Griffiths to the Capital Club in a show entitled ‘FLIGHT’. A proportion of the works will immortalise elements of Dubai’s unfolding history by referencing its culture, geographical history, design and architecture – all becoming synonymous with Dubai.
‘FLIGHT’ will offer art collectors in Dubai a selection of new and previously unseen works by the artist for the first time. Carne is known widely in the British contemporary art scene for works he creates with unconventional mediums such as tea along with more traditional materials such as paint and ink. Artworks in this collection feature his signature organic and fluid forms, with lines that create visually ethereal portraits.
Mesmerised by the exquisite beauty and design in many corners of Dubai’s commercial and cultural quarters, Carne has referenced these in several of his artworks. Morphing Dubai’s pearl-diving and one of Art history’s most famous paintings, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, Carne has used pearlescent paint on his own reworking of the masterpiece.
Some works are strongly influenced by calligraphy with Carne’s trademark linear style and in yet another, he makes strong references to the design and architectural elements of the city such as the floor to ceiling 24 metre water sculpture ‘ The Waterfall’ in the Dubai Mall.
Ultimately, the surreal images Carne creates are recorded in a dream-like state onto the page in an autonomous manner to create visually beautiful works of art. His work is a journey of escapism for the viewer, strengthened through his use of colour and contour. Once the viewer has reached that point, they have been fully hypnotised by his art.
Liam West, Founder of West Contemporary said: “We are thrilled to present the work of Carne Griffiths to new art audiences and collectors in Dubai. Carne’s work is hugely popular amongst collectors who know the British and European art scenes, and we are sure that it will be a fantastic contribution to the ever-growing art scene in Dubai.”
Ian Palmer, General Manager, Capital Club said: “Thanks to our new-found partnership with West Contemporary, we’ve had very positive feedback about the new art offerings we’ve placed in the Capital Club. These new works by Carne will serve to further inspire our members and guests.”
The gallery will be available to Club members. Non-members can also view the works of art, by appointment, until Thursday, February 1st, 2018.
