Written in Water by Ragamala Dance Company, be immersed in a creative world brought to life by a cast of US and Indian dancers, beautiful costumes, and live music by leading composer Amir elSaffar.
The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is gearing up to host Ragamala Dance Company’s regional premiere of the multi-disciplinary show Written in Water, set to take place in The Red Theater on Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday March 22.
In Written in Water classical bharatanatyam meets digital projection, which brings the Indian board game, Paramapadam (Snakes & Ladders), to vivid life. With a live score that interweaves maqam with Carnatic music, the choreography unfolds upon large-scale projections of original paintings by Chennai-based visual artist Keshav.
The show features an outstanding music ensemble composed and performed by Amir elSaffar, also a returning artist to The Arts Center, which will tap into a distinct blend of Iraqi, jazz, and Carnatic instruments.
Following a tremendous reception during The Arts Center’s first season back in 2015, the Bharatanatyam-led Ragamala Dance Company returns with its entrancing show Written in Water –which was partially developed in residence at NYU Abu Dhabi.
Bill Bragin, executive artistic director at The Arts Center at NYUAD, is pleased to welcome back the dance company, saying: “When Ragamala performed in our inaugural season as our first ever dance presentation, it created such a tremendous response we immediately had to add a show to meet the demand. Audiences had a rapturous reaction to Ragamala’s gorgeous combination of deeply rooted classical bharatanatyam and their contemporary approach to presenting the work. While at NYU Abu Dhabi, they brought together Written in Water’s creative collaborators for the first time to explore the piece in an important early workshop. We’re thrilled to welcome the company back to present the piece that has now been touring with Abu Dhabi’s imprimatur to wide acclaim.”
Tickets now available for performances on Wednesday March 21 and Thursday March 22 at 8pm. For more information please visit: http://www.nyuad-artscenter.org
