“And some say Lavinia appeared years later, a woman of great wealth…”
- a line from the story of Lady Lavinia and Thomas Maitland
For Avastave’s first Ramadan 2018 capsule collection, creative director Dmitri Ruwan looks to the continuing romance between Lady Lavinia and Thomas Maitland, only this time designs are juxtaposed against a mirage of desert dunes, jewelled sunsets and Sixties glamour. After Maitland’s leave from Ceylon, she travelled to the Middle East, spending days exploring exotic souqs and basking in the glorious opulence of Arabian hospitality. Enamoured both by the Arab world’s sense of luxury and her own spiritual evolution, she delved into the local culture. Kaftans in burnished copper silk and gold threaded jacquard convey a sense of regality, while each silhouette is dipped in tones of minimalism and modesty.
The Avastave woman is one who is confident in her aesthetic but recognises the metamorphic powers of change.
