Dubai, UAE — For a star studded red carpet event, A-List celebrities often call upon their favourite couture dressmakers for a custom-made gown to make a bold and beautiful statement. The LA-based brand STELLO launched in 2013 with designer, Michael Costello at the helm, and has since emerged as the “go-to” gown label for those who know what it takes to turn heads in tinsel town.
STELLO was inspired by a lifelong deep appreciation for vintage Hollywood red carpet glamour and the desire to make every woman feel like a superstar from time to time. The muse for every collection, is the ‘STELLO GIRL’. She is a confident and daring female with luxurious sensuality at the core. This woman can transcend time through any era because she always remains classic with an edgy twist. She can be of any age, background or size and ultimately has the compelling desire to feel and look beautiful.
Over the last decade the label has continued to push boundaries with ‘fine detail in every stitch and yard of fabric’. Handcrafted in its Los Angeles atelier, STELLO gowns are created from high quality extravagant materials sourced in the USA. Creative Director, Kyle Beach, says “Each collection is approached poetically in its inception, philosophically in the construction, and meticulously in its craftsmanship. We first ask ‘what story are we trying to tell?’ Then work hard to allow the clothes to tell that story”.
A bespoke piece can be custom made within three weeks with the seasonal ready-to-wear runway collections for women and men available to purchase online. STELLO take utmost pride in their craftsmanship, whether creating a custom gown or bridal wear, cocktail dresses, jumpsuits or separates, there is a consistent thread through each garment that epitomises a new generation of ‘fearless glamour’.
It could be said that STELLO is more than just a bespoke label, but fashion inventor too. Some of STELLO’S most famous lycra-spandex form-fitting gowns did not exist until created by the designers at the helm. The creative team are always searching for the highest quality fabric and are not afraid to experiment with new and daring materials. Standout pieces include paillette-covered gowns with sheer side panels, canyon-deep decolletage and halter neck dresses with glistening silk and jewel like finishes. It’s easy to get lost in the fairytale with gown names like, ‘Warlock’, ‘White Swan’, ‘Garden’ and ‘Risen’, most recently released in the 2018 runway gown collection, titled ‘Keystone’ and the ‘Red Rapture’ swimwear collection which showcased at Miami Swim Week 2018.
STELLO’S star-studded list of celebrity fans dressed for high profile events is as dazzling and glittering as the gowns themselves. Beyonce opened her ‘On The Run Tour’ in 2014 wearing a show stopping STELLO dress, and it’s no surprise the Kardashians have not been shy to glam up in STELLO pieces and flaunt their famous curves to millions across Instagram. So much so that STELLO even featured in a 2016 episode of ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ in one of Kim’s styling sessions. For the Billboards Music Awards in 2016, STELLO dressed iconic pop stars Britney Spears, Kesha and Ciara to name but a few, cementing its place as a label that’s as blindly glamorous as the stars. STELLO designs pieces that are made for the flashing lights of the paparazzi and unforgettable for years to come.
A self-taught designer, Michael Costello built his fashion empire by “creating for women of all shapes and sizes” in an industry that at the time, lacked diversity in dressing. It became Costello’s mission to make women feel their “very best” through his talent for enhancing their natural hourglass figure. Costello was put on the styling map, when he became a finalist on popular US television series, ‘Project Runway’, very soon after STELLO dresses started to dominate every major red carpet from the Grammy’s to the Oscars. STELLO quickly graced the cover of every major fashion publication across the USA, and to this day several pieces are proudly exhibited at ‘The Grammys Museum’.
Formerly MT Costello, the reigns of the business were passed onto Michael Costello’s cousin and co-designer in 2015, Stephanie Costello. Leading the business with Kyle, she believes that, “Fashion in the Middle East is an admittedly complex mix between local traditions and western fashion, with many determining factors. STELLO’s goal remains the same -to transcend age, location and social class by remaining timeless and exquisite”.
STELLO has the potential to become a worldwide household name. The brand’s vision is to metamorphose into a superior upmarket global lifestyle brand. At the same time, forging their own path to fit the needs of an ever-changing technological future, allows the team to approach the business from a nimble and graceful point of view.
